Unlike the annual system, where the final examination is the only test of the learning throughout the year, every assignment, quiz, mid term counts towards determining your grade in the semester system. The final examination is still the largest single contributor to the course distribution, but not the only one. In this way, you have to be on your toes throughout the semester in order to get a good grade. Semester system is tougher than the annual system. For the students coming from the FSc background, it is sometimes a bit difficult to get used to it.

How does the academic system at GIKI compare to other universities in Pakistan?

GIKI is revered by students all over Pakistan for its challenging academic environment and high education standards. The 300-strong batch selected every year has 300 success stories behind it before coming to GIKI. However, despite the academic superiority and achievements of the students in their pre-graduate studies, most of the students find it very difficult to maintain the same academic standards that they used to maintain earlier. The prime reason for this is the tough academic environment at GIKI. Once the toppers and successful students from all over Pakistan are lined into one batch and are subjected to relative grading, then only a few can achieve what they desire. Also, at GIKI, students are not given the so called ‘prep’ leaves. In fact, the mid-semester exams are conducted in evening simultaneously with regular classes in the morning, and the final exams are conducted in the sixteenth week immediately after the classes conclude in the fifteenth week. This is the reason why some ex-students from leading educational universities in Pakistan also find it difficult to score the same GPA they used to score in their previous Alma Mater. This setup makes the academic life very challenging but inculcates qualities such as time-management, multi-tasking and working in pressure situations in the students. This is also why most companies prefer fresh engineers from GIK Institute over fresh engineers from other institutes.
