While modern antimalarial medications are currently the primary method of treatment, the historical application of cannabis for malaria underscores the plant’s diverse therapeutic potential. This holds particularly true for patients undergoing chemotherapy or experiencing conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Patients using medical marijuana frequently turn to cannabis for managing chronic pain issues such as fibromyalgia (neuropathy), and migraines. Among indigenous peoples, one of the most prevalent medicinal applications of cannabis was for pain management. Strains originating from North America (such as OG Kush), illustrate the enduring impact of indigenous practices. Though less documented, some Native American tribes in North America have similarly integrated cannabis into their spiritual practices.

Hindu customs incorporated cannabis into religious festivals and meditation rituals, particularly during Holi celebrations, where the consumption of bhang connects devotees to divine consciousness. Furthermore, users’ belief in the efficacy of traditional healing methods may create a placebo effect, providing benefits beyond the actual practice itself. For instance, a placebo for acupuncture is quite challenging to implement; however, one can evaluate the effects of treatment against non-treatment.
